Alice and David Chaplin, along with their children, have relocated to a gated exclusive housing development where social standing is paramount. The snobbish standard is set by Queen Bee Ffion, who speaks to her daughter in French even in stores, and Alice is concerned about the parents' competition to get their children into the fashionable Chelsea college rather than the despised local comprehensive school. Even better, Sarah McDonald accepts a position as school secretary in order to be closer to the action. However, the reality remains that Molly, Alice's daughter, scored only 38 per cent on her dummy run entry exam for Chelsea. In a state of panic, Alice fears that her daughter would be forced into prostitution. She resolves to mimic Molly and sit for the exam on her own.
