Circus of Books

Karen and Barry Mason fell on hard things in 1976 and answered a Los Angeles Times ad. Larry Flynt sought Hustler magazine distributors. They became totally immersed in the LGBT community when they took over Circus of Books. They became the leading US gay porn distributors a decade later. The video focuses on their double life as parents and LGBT people during an unaccepted time. Their hurdles included a federal obscenity trial and making their business a haven during the AIDS crisis. Circus of Books is recounted through the lens of the proprietors' daughter, artist, filmmaker, and singer Rachel Mason.
