The Ref

Caroline and Lloyd really are a couple always at one another's throats, pros in crafting barbs at another's expense. Indeed, they are so enthusiastic about belittling each other which they never stop -- maybe not at gun point. The gunman is Gus, a thief on the run from law enforcement, who kidnaps the couple within an insurance policy, planning to utilize their home. But significantly a lot more than Gus forcing him into the position of peacemaker -- for the sake of his sanity is proven by their incessant bickering. To make things even worse he discovers he has taken the pair hostage the night of the big Christmas party, and the guests are already on the way. Perhaps not needing to leave Lloyd and Caroline unattended, Gus chooses to attend the party, pretending to be the few marriage counselor. This naturally contributes to a series of confusions, as marital tensions head and the hostage tragedy towards their decision.
